Alex Pretti was a 37-year-old intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs hospital, where he dedicated his career to caring for the nation's most vulnerable veterans. Born in Illinois and raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Alex was a former Boy Scout, Green Bay Boy Choir member, and multi-sport athlete who carried his sense of service into adulthood. After earning his biology degree from the University of Minnesota in 2011, he worked as a research scientist advancing cancer research before answering a deeper calling to become a registered nurse. His colleagues knew him as the kind of person you genuinely enjoyed being around—someone who would trade mountain biking trail recommendations one moment and provide compassionate critical care the next.

On January 24, 2025, Alex was shot and killed by federal immigration agents while peacefully documenting their activities on a Minneapolis street. He had joined community members exercising their First Amendment rights following the earlier shooting of Renee Good in the same city. Video evidence analyzed by BBC Verify shows Alex holding only his phone, standing between agents and a woman who had been pushed to the ground. His family has called the administration's characterization of their son as a "domestic terrorist" reprehensible, urging the public to see the truth: Alex was a legal gun owner with no criminal record, a devoted outdoorsman, and above all, a good man who spent his life helping others.
